Is This Your First Time?

Updated: Aug 25, 2022

Getting your own place? Whether its a house, dorm, apartment, or yurt, everyone needs to learn the basics. Regular Laundry trips are necessary for keeping your clothes clean and smelling nice, and it’s not difficult to do once you get the basics down. We’ll go over those basics here in this handy laundry guide for beginners. Have a look: Laundry 101: A Quick Guide for Beginners

  1. Regular Visits to The Suds Bucket. We always recommend regular visits to your laundromat. This prevents most stains from setting beyond your ability to lift, your clothes from getting almost permanent creases and wrinkles, and the manageable piles from becoming mountains. Not to mention the alleviating the smell of dirty clothes in your home.

  2. Sort your clothes: We suggest sorting your clothes into at least four piles: darks, lights, whites and colors. Put all dark garments into the dark pile, whites to be bleached into the white pile, light colored and off-white garments into the light pile, and colors into the mixed pile. You want to pre-sort your laundry so colors don’t bleed in the wash. For example, if you wash a new pair of jeans with t-shirts, the blue dye will bleed and turn the white clothes a blueish color.

  3. Wash your clothes: Once you have loaded one of your piles into the washing machine, select a load size (i.e., small, medium, large). Next, the type of load agitation setting (Normal, Gentle or Permanent Press.) Wash whites in hot water and lights in warm water. Darks and Colors in cold water. Hot water should only be used for disinfecting purposes, like white t-shirts, underwear, bath towels and washcloths. At The Suds Bucket Laundromat of Shawnee, the washing machine procedure is to add your clothes to the machine. Add liquid detergent to the upper compartment (as well as bleach if doing a white load and softener if desired.) If using pods, add the pod with the clothes in the washing machine. Follow the directions on the machine to start the cycle.

  4. Dry your clothes: After the wash cycle is done, it’s time to dry. Immediately remove wet clothes from the washing machine (less wrinkling.) For sweaters and items you’re worried about shrinking, dry them at a low heat or hang them to dry. For items like undershirts and underwear, a hot drying cycle should be fine. Check the tag on garments to see how the manufacturer recommends drying them if you’re unsure what is best.

Laundry may seem intimidating, but the friendly Laundry Attendants at The Suds Bucket are always available to answer questions and help. Once you have a couple of visits under your belt, you'll be a Laundry Pro!
