Skiing? Snowboarding? Hunting? Fishing? Time to Wash, Dry and Fold your Snow / Rain / Cold Kit...

Updated: Aug 25, 2022

Whether you are heading to the slopes or just coming back, winding down your Hunting Season or simply braving Oklahoma Weather to grab groceries, you probably have a lot of less-than-fresh Water Repellent Clothing. Being worn outside and daily use will create a smelly, dirty situation. Grease, perspiration, and grime build up over time and your garments will need to be washed.

Allowing grime to build will lead to a loss of clothing's ability to repel water. To preserve it's functionality and lifespan, water proof / repellant items need to be cared for in special ways. Here are some great cleaning guidelines.

Wash Cycle

1. ALWAYS Read (and follow) the labels. Start by reading the garment care labels inside your clothing. They will give you all the details on what your water repellent items are made of as well as instructions on how to wash them. For most items, Machine Washing is fine.

2. Empty your pockets and, using a soft laundry brush, remove loose dirt.

Don't Use Stain Removers. If stain lifting is needed, try pre-treating stain with your laundry detergent before the wash. For stubborn stains, you may wish to soak the treated items in detergent and warm water for 30 minutes prior to the Wash Cycle.

3. Close all the zippers and Velcro closures. Closing zippers will help protect them and avoid damaging fabrics in the load.

4. Turn the garment inside out. If the garment has a Gore-Tex type waterproof membrane, do not turn inside out.

5. Add liquid laundry detergent according to the product's instructions (do not use a powder). Do not add fabric softener or other products to the wash.

6. Select the “Delicate” wash cycle. DON’T over-spin your waterproof items. Using a gentle wash cycle with a minimum spin will help prevent creasing, pulling and twisting fabric. A delicate wash cycle is the machine equivalent to handwashing, this cycle uses warm or cold water with low or no spin. It's the shortest and most gentle cleaning cycle. If you have items made of down or "puffy" materials, add a couple of tennis (or wool) balls to the load. To help remove any detergent residue, you may wish to add a second rinse to the spin cycle.

7. When the wash cycle ends, Remove items immediately.

Drying Cycle

How you dry your Outdoor Clothing depends on the fabric. Follow these tips:

1. For Synthetic clothing: Don’t have a dryer? Come to The Suds Bucket to dry your down clothing. Alternatively, Hang Dry. Leave your clothing turned inside out, place on a hanger, and allow to air dry. To help revive the item's waterproofing, put a towel on top of the outer fabric, use a warm iron (not hot!) set to ‘Synthetic,’ and press quickly and lightly.

Using a Dryer: leave your clothing turned inside out and set your dryer to a gentle ‘synthetic’ program. At the end of the cycle, if items are still damp, finish by "air drying" on hangers. No ironing is necessary typically. The heat from the dryer will remove wrinkles and revive the garment's water resisting abilities.

2. For Down Filled items: Immediately remove the items from the washing machine and place them in the dryer. Be sure to add 2 Tennis or Wool Balls to help "Fluff" the feathers. Select "Gentle" Cycle. Restart the cycle as needed until clothing is dry and has regained its original loft. If your gear absorbs water after washing and drying, you may need to re-waterproof your clothes. While it’s not recommended to reproof after every wash, you should do so when necessary.
