Whether it's just you or you're hosting your tribe, there’s nothing quite as satisfying as slipping into freshly laundered bed linens at the end of your day. Before your guests arrive, you will want to make sure to freshen up your comforters, bedspreads, throws, blankets, quilts and sheets, especially if they have been in storage. Sheets should be washed/rotated at least once a week. Perspiration, body oils, dead skin cells and pet hair build up quickly. For good hygiene, it's important to launder your linens on a regular basis. The laundry experts at The Suds Bucket are at your service. How Often (and How) To Wash Bed Sheets To keep your linens fresh, our experts recommend washing sheets at least once a week. If you have allergies, pets in/on your bed, or a family member is sick, consider washing sheets more often than once a week, at appropriate temperatures and with the right detergent. If you are doing it yourself, here are some tips to help ensure your bedding is clean and fresh.
Always start by reading the Care Instructions label before washing or drying your sheets. The Care Instructions label details specific cleaning information. If the label is missing, take care to research care for the type of fabric, e.g. Wool, Cotton, Polyester, Rayon, etc.
If lightly soiled and no one is coughing, launder sheets (and other bedding items) on a "Cold Water" setting, regular cycle. Like my dear old Granny used to say, "Light Colors in warmer temperatures, Colors in colder temperatures." Cold water also helps prevent color fading.
Lights and darks are separated into different loads. Just like your clothes, separating bedding is important. Depending on temperature and chemicals used, colors can fade or bleed. I.e. those new red Christmas sheets should not be washed in hot water with your favorite Grandmother's heirloom white quilt.
Pretreat Stains – It is always best to spot treat stains when they happen. Time tends to "set" a stain and make it more difficult to remove or "lift." At The Suds Bucket, our experts treat stains and use a special brush to start the process of "lifting" stains before washing. If your bedding is heavily stained, utilize an in-wash laundry booster. The Laundry Experts at The Suds Bucket recommend CLOROX 2 Stain Fighter and Color Booster. This product, available for purchase at The Suds Bucket, is a color safe powder bleach that brightens colors, whitens whites and removes tough stains and dirt on colors.
Don't overfill the washing machine drum (or, if so equipped, don't wrap sheets around the tower or agitator.) Clothes and Bedding need room to move to get clean. If the washer is over-filled, water and detergent cannot fully penetrate the fibers. Avoiding over-filling your washer also helps prevent stretching, rips and excessive wrinkles.
Tumble dry with Wool Dryer Balls and a Dryer Sheet – Review the care instructions label and follow drying recommendations. Remember "High" temperatures can cause wrinkling and shrinking. To dry your sheets evenly and add a little softness and fluff, toss in a wool dryer ball and a dryer sheet. As the dryer balls tumble around in the dryer, they soften, lift and separate Sheets and Comforters. This allows hot air to circulate better and dry faster (saving time and energy).
Comforters, Throws, Blankets and Bedspreads Most comforters, blankets and bedspreads may be too large to be "home washed." We believe it’s best to leave these items to the Laundry Experts at The Suds Bucket. If you decide to embark on this job yourself, thoroughly and carefully read the care label. These linen materials vary by colors and fabrics. Most comforters blankets and bedspreads are too large to fit in a residential washer and dryer. Often, if these items do "fit", there isn't enough room for the machines to clean the items and dry them properly. Additionally, do you know the "right" amount of detergent to use (or the "right" dryer temperature setting) for these items? Let us help. In addition to our attendant's helpful advice, The Suds Bucket's large capacity, Speed Queen machines are perfect for the task.
