Jacket Less Than Fresh?

Updated: Dec 21, 2022

Caring for your winter jackets and gear is easy and important. If you've taken the time to invest in a good winter jacket, preserve it for many seasons to come. Winter jackets and gear are often comprised of synthetic fabrics - they are cost effective, wick moisture and hold heat. But they also require special care. To keep them fresh and ready for Oklahoma's cold-snap-prone weather, read on.

The experts here at The Suds Bucket on Harrison Street recommend washing your jacket and gear before putting it away for the season. October is a good time to give them a fresh wash before Winter sets in. To preserve and care for your winter gear:

**Check the care tag to make sure you follow washing instructions - different fabrics demand different care! Pretreat your jacket to target any stains you may have accumulated over the winter season: think body oils, sweat, food or grass stains. We recommend pretreating with Shout Stain Remover. Most of today's detergents are formulated to work well with synthetic fabrics and cold water. Be sure to read your specific detergent instructions.

  1. Remove the hood and gloves from your jacket - often times, these are lined with fur (or faux fur trim). You can hand wash separately by soaking in a tub or sink. Use a detergent specially formulated for hand washing (e.g. Woolite.)

  2. Make sure to empty and close/zip/velcro/snap your pockets before you wash. Zippers, velcro and snaps can scratch and irritate Jacket fibers in the wash.

  3. Wash your jacket and gear with a detergent using cold or warm water and a gentle cycle. The gentle cycle ensures a soft tumble and prolongs the life of your gear. If odor is unusually strong, add 1 cup white vinegar to the rinse cycle.

  4. To dry your jacket and gear, we recommend air drying for about an hour on Medium Heat, then tumble dry on Low Heat to fluff the jacket/gear, but be careful not to overheat the garment. To help create fluff, decrease drying time, etc., the experts here at The Suds Bucket on Harrison will throw in a couple of Wool Dryer Balls.

Pro Tip: Store your jacket and gear in a cool, dry place - basements are not ideal as they could introduce moisture to the garments - causing mold, mildew and discoloration. If you can, opt for a lightweight, breathable, cotton storage bag for your garments.
